BEING GLUTEN FREE – A NEED OR AN OPTION?

With time, people have become extremely conscious of their health and general well-being. So much that they have started eliminating certain products and substances from their diets in order to improve their health and live a better life. One of these dangerous substances is gluten. There are things that happen to our body when you eat clean food. Once you see how your body changes, you can focus on the helpful aspects and move forward in a healthy way. We’ve all heard about the hazards of gluten in one way or another. It could be that one co-worker who always turns down the pizza or the family member who insists on serving zucchini spaghetti instead of regular one. Most of us have a vague understanding of what gluten is and why it is potentially harmful, but it’s worth doing a deeper dive on the subject to understand exactly what’s going on. Why is everyone talking about gluten these days, and why do some people avoid it like any disease.

What Is Gluten Exactly?

Gluten is a protein naturally found in some grains including wheat, barley, and rye. Sometimes it’s in oats, but only because the oats may have been processed with other foods that contain gluten.
It acts like a binder, holding food together and adding a “stretchy” quality. Other grains that contain gluten are wheat berries, spelt, durum, emmer, semolina, farina, farro, graham, and triticale. It’s common in processed foods such as bread, pasta, pizza, and cereal.

Let’s look at what gluten does to our bodies.
Humans have digestive enzymes that help us break down food. Protease is the enzyme that helps our body process proteins, but it can’t completely break down gluten. Undigested gluten makes its way to the small intestine. The small intestine is unable to fully absorb each unit of protein, and this leads to poor digestion and other issues. Most people can handle the undigested gluten with no problems. But gluten-sensitive people often report that gluten causes abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome. This is the reason why our body sometimes reacts badly to an overload of gluten. With gluten everywhere, it’s no surprise that so many of us struggle with weight and other health problems, despite living in the advanced modern world.

So is gluten bad for you?

Gluten in itself, especially gluten found in whole grains, is not bad for healthy people whose bodies can tolerate it. However, grains like wheat are often stripped down to make processed foods such as snack crackers and potato chips. These refined products have very little resemblance to the actual wheat plant, which is actually highly nutritious.
